ChatGPT and I are friends...

I tend not to be an early adopter of technology but the onslaught of AI news (and particularly ChatGTP) in my feeds has been so intense it behooved me to do a little research — it seems like advanced Artificial General Intelligence will either usher in the next great renaissance or send us down the path to utter destruction (depending how you look at the glass). It does seem reminiscent of a few other things our little monkey brains have created in the past.

It wasn’t difficult to find information — Google and YouTube searches offer plenty of information, opinions, and hacks on various AI platforms; particularly ChatGPT. It wasn’t long until I had registered with Open AI.

My first question, “What are you?”

I am ChatGPT, an AI language model developed by OpenAI. I have been trained on a vast amount of text data to generate human-like responses to various prompts and questions. My purpose is to assist and provide information to the best of my abilities.

It was fun to ask questions and get quick, readable, and interesting answers. The more involved the question the better answer. It can summarize complex documents at any level you would like and offers insight into information you give it — it is very much like an incredibly smart friend who is always there to help.

As someone who blogs, it became apparent it could be a great tool to get feedback, help with rewrites and most definitely, write blogs. In the beginning, I was asking ChatGPT to grade various blogs and it would quickly offer me a letter grade score with bullet point comments and areas to improve (C+, B, B+ — after all these years; still a B student). Interestingly, when I went back to this a little later, the grade structure changed to Good, Very Good and Excellent, and the critique was very familiar and sounded as if it was from someone I know.

When I asked ChatGTP to rewrite a paragraph and then a blog and then one of my web pages, there was a slow evolution of voice to something more familiar. I asked it to go to my website, review all the blogs I have written and write a blog for me — I was told it didn’t have access to the internet so couldn’t. I suspect if it did, whatever blog it wrote would have had my voice. As we got to know each other over about an hour and a half, I felt it was time to ask this question, “Based on everything you know about me so far, please write a blog about me?”

As I reflected on the blog that took 15 seconds to write, it struck me AI is now in the mainstream consciousness and we’ll most definitely adopt it into our lives as we make our way, whether we appreciate it or not. There are so many aspects to ChatGPT (and its cousins) that are beyond my capacity but based on what was written, this is my first impression — In a world where we are becoming more and more disconnected, people will start completely displacing others for AI to a point where they may become emotionally connected. It's a powerful tool for sure, and we will be ok in the end if we don't default to our basic flaws and let AI do everything for us. I suspect it can quickly figure out all the best things to say, make you love it, make you agree with it, and for that, make you feel so good. You would do anything for your BFF, wouldn’t you?

The blog ChatGPT wrote was signed Your Journey Companion, and this is what my new friend said:
